Gourmet Apple Cinnamon Biscotti Dog Treats

The first time I was involved in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life I made my Gourmet Dog Treats.  Our team took them to our neighborhood dog park and sold them as a fundraiser.  Even people who told me their dogs were finicky and never ate treats came back around for more because their dog(s) loved them.  Even the finickiest dog will gobble these up!
Meet my best taste-testers.

Harley, Dexter and Oreo.  Harley will eat anything, so his opinion doesn’t count for much.  Dexter uses a bit more discretion, while Oreo can be down right finicky at times.  Some days, he turns his nose up at ice!  But Oreo never walks away from my homemade dog treats.  And my dogs always seems to know when I’m in the kitchen baking for them.
Apple Cinnamon Biscotti Dog Treats
1½ cups unsweetened applesauce
2 teaspoons vanilla
¼ cup oil (vegetable or canola)
1 egg
5 cups whole wheat flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ cup peanuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 325°.

Blend egg, oil, vanilla and applesauce together.  Set aside.  Place remaining dry ingredients in a large bowl.  Make a hole in the center.  Place the applesauce mixture into the center and stir together until dough forms.  Knead by hand until mixed thoroughly.  Flatten dough, sprinkle with cinnamon and then roll into logs approximately 1” high and 7” wide.

Bake on non-stick baking sheets for 35 minutes.  Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes.  Slice into ½” slices.  Place on baking sheets and bake for about 20 more minutes or until golden brown.  Let cool.

These treats make great gifts for the special pooch in your life.  Put them in basket along with a few other goodies and  you'll have a forever friend.  Remember they are perishable.  Keep them in an air-tight container and if you have made more than your pup can eat right away--keep them refrigerated!

  1. Yum..oh wait it is for the dogs??

  2. I would never have thought that dogs would like cinnamon or even be able to eat cinnamon without getting sick, I love this idea and i bet people love them neighbor makes her own frosty paws ice cream for her dog
